Three Notable Saddlebreds Mourned Over Past Three Weeks

Lexington , Ky. – Three American Saddlebred names recognizable to many in the Saddlebred community have died within the last three weeks: Denmark’s Radiant Society (BHF), Phi Slama Jama and CHSultan’s Hot Copy.
On Tuesday, October 23, Denmark’s Radiant Society (BHF) died at age 30. She had been owned by Dr. and Mrs. Simon Fredricks of Simbara Farms, Houston, Texas, since 1979. Denmark’s Radiant Society (BHF) (CHRonald Reagan x Denmark’s Society Sue [BHF]) was the 1980 Three-Year-Old Fine Harness World’s Champion. In 1985, she produced eventual two-time Fine Harness World’s Grand Champion CHBe Happy. In 1992, she produced another World’s Grand Champion, CHA Sweet Treat, who won it twice in fine harness and once in three-gaited. Denmark’s Radiant Society (BHF) had her most success with Merchant Prince. Nine of her 18 registered produce are by him and of those nine, six became World’s Champions.
Phi Slama Jama died Thursday, November 8 at age 23. Dr. Alan Raun of Reedannland, Cumming, Iowa, has owned him since 1985. That year, Phi Slama Jama (CHThe Karankawa Chief x Wild And Lovely PH) won the Kentucky State Fair Yearling Breeders Stake and became a World’s Champion the next year, winning the Two-Year-Old Fine Harness Stallion/Gelding Stake. He won the UPHA Fine Harness Championship at the American Royal in 1987. As a sire, Phi Slama Jama has 461 registered get, including six 2007 foals. Over 160 of his get have claimed a first place ribbon and more than 60 have been Kentucky State Fair ribbon winners.
CHSultan’s Hot Copy also died on Thursday, November 8. The 1988 gelding showed as recently as 2005 at age 17. Carolyn Garrett of San Antonio, Texas, purchased him in 1995 and for the past 13 years, CHSultan’s Hot Copy (Sultan's Unforgettable x Hot Flash) has been with trainer George Knight of Lexington, Kentucky. Each of the past four years, Hot Copy has been 2007 Fine Harness World’s Grand Champion CHAlong Came A Spider’s pasture mate during the winter months. As a five-gaited horse, Hot Copy racked up several wins at Asheville, River Ridge, Indianapolis, Rock Creek, Bonnie Blue and took reserves at Lexington and the American Royal. Then, as a three-gaited show pleasure horse, he earned a Reserve World’s Champion title and continued to have the success he’d enjoyed in the five-gaited division.
