Mercer County Fair Fundraiser

The Mercer County Fair & Horse Show will hold its first “Raising The Roof” Gala Saturday, April 14 at Arrowhead Farm in Harrodsburg, Ky., beginning at 6 p.m.

The event, designed to be an annual activity, will raise money for the construction of a new, modern 39-stall horse barn to replace the barn that burned last December and to be ready in time for this year’s Mercer County Fair Horse Show, July 24-28.

There was great Mercer County Fair history and nostalgia associated with Barn 3 because it was the oldest barn on the grounds and for many years served as the training headquarters for Willie “Jack Rabbit” Bottoms and the Freeman Brothers. It is still fondly referred to as “Jack Rabbit’s Barn” by both Mercer Countians and horse show exhibitors.

“We are particularly indebted to Melinda Moore and David Crockett for donating the use of Arrowhead Farm for this event,” said Brad Noel, horse show manager and co-chairman of the gala. “Melinda and her father, the late Tom Moore, and Arrowhead Farm have been long-time friends of the Mercer County Fair Horse Show. This is just one example of their support of our efforts to make major improvements in our facilities.”

The April 14 gala will include live entertainment, food, refreshments and live and silent auctions with large and small items of interest to both horse and non-horse enthusiasts. Trips, stud fees and lodging accommodations are among the auction items already secured.

“Our intention is to make this an annual event,” said LeMayne Ellis, fair board president and gala co-chairman. “We have great plans for the revitalization of our show grounds, including a covered arena and warm-up area. Future galas will help us finance these projects and/or provide matching funds for grants.”

Tickets are $30 individual, $50 per couple and $250 for tables of 10. Attendance is by invitation only. For information on invitations or donating items for the auctions, contact either Brad Noel at (859) 613-4503 or LeMayne Ellis at (859) 265-0872.
