Marti McClure Passes Away

Marti McClure with WC My Starlight's Fantasy

Martha H. “Marti” McClure, 97, passed away with her daughter, Sally Jackson, son-in-law, Joe Jackson and grandson Joe Ford Jackson by her side on Thursday, January 12, 2006 in Overland Park, KS. A graveside memorial service was held on January 16 in Kirksville, MO.

Marti was born June 14, 1908 to Hubert William Jones and Deborah Jane Laughlin Jones of Detroit, MI. While at the University of Michigan she met and married Harold Dealion McClure. They moved to Kirksville where Dr. McClure became a nationally renowned polio specialist during the polio epidemic of the 1950’s with polio patients being sent to him from throughout the country.

American Saddlebred horses were raised on their Hills of Home Farm and Marti got great enjoyment traveling to shows across the country watching Sally ride. The ASHA/UPHA trip to London in 1980 was special to her as she got to see her daughter, Sally, ride her Saddlebred in front of British Royalty.

Hills of Home Farm horses included Golden Butterfly Again, Hytone Lady, Starla Star, Black Walnut, Joanne Chief, Social Butterfly and Rambler’s Butterfly. Other horses Sally owned and showed are - WGC Wild-Eyed and Wicked, RWC Aisling’s Treasure, WC My Starlight’s Fantasy, WC No’el-No’el, WC Token Favorite and WC Cats Don’t Dance.

Marti’s love of Saddlebreds never faded and during the last years of her life she read only Saddlebred magazines and watched horse show tapes. The horses kept her going.

Memorials in Marti’s name may be sent to the American Saddlebred Horse Museum at the Kentucky Horse Park, 4083 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511 or Stephens College Friends of Equestrian, Stephens College Equestrian Dept., Box 2071, Columbia, MO 65215.
