Double D Hosts Breakfast With Babies

by Susan F. Harris

In recent years, one of the most highly anticipated events during the week of Lexington Junior League Horse Show has become Double D Ranch’s Breakfast With Our Babies. Held on Saturday morning, July 15, several hundred Saddlebred enthusiasts made the short trek out to Versailles for the third year in a row to see a magnificent stallion and some of his babies.

Breakfast before the Babies

Double D stands world champion sire Sir William Robert for owner Tom Galbreath. Oohs and aahs were heard throughout the crowd as he was brought out for inspection. With veteran showman Jim Aikman serving as emcee, each person in attendance was exhorted to raise a foal… buy a foal… show a foal. In addition to recounting Sir William Robert’s attributes and record of winning babies, Aikman reminded everyone that the All American Weanling Cup “now has almost one million dollars in the bank… for you to win!” (applause). He further stated that the owner of this year’s winning weanling will take home nearly $60,000 (more applause).

After Sir William Robert was taken back to the barn, the baby parade began. All five royally bred and beautifully turned out weanlings were by Sir William Robert. The first to catch the crowd’s fancy was Sir Eleganté who is out of (SA) Hi-C Tango’s Classic Elegance, a South African champion yearling.

Next out was Excalibur Edge, a big handsome colt nicely trimmed in white. This colt is out Scarfiotti, the dam of WC My Elegance On Parade and Tango For Tips.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, an amazing bundle of energy burst out onto the lawn. Roberta Belle, only 30-days-old, didn’t hesitate to announce to the world that she is somethin’ special. Out of the sensational Dancing Up A Storm LCC, Roberta Belle posed like a seasoned futurity champion.

Sir Beaufort is yet another handsome chestnut baby brimming with presence. His dam, Tango With Me, is a half sister to CH Trapp Mountain.

Sir Silver Knight completed the smorgasbord of delectable babies. Oh my, oh my! All I can say is that this colt even tempted Aikman to come out and take a turn on the lead. Sir Silver Knight is out of R.R. Silver Lady, WC Three-Year-Old and Ladies Three-Gaited Mare who is also the dam of WC A Silver Charm, Our Silver Charm, and Silver Exchange.

After the last weanling, everyone adjourned back inside where they were treated to an under-saddle display of Sir William Robert’s power and talent. Dena seemed to enjoy ripping down those long aisles, not unlike a road horse under saddle, but in distinct Saddlebred form. On each side of the barn she and the fabulous stallion paused to catch a breath and let spectators catch one last eyeful of the beauty that is Sir William Robert.
