The fifth annual Bluegrass Futurity Limited Breeders’ classes were held Oct. 5, 2006 at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. The judges for this year’s show were Richard Obenauf, Rob Wilson and Ricky Harris. To date this lucrative program has given away $512,107. The 2006 prize money divided between the weanling and two-year-old classes was $96,749.85. This year, classes marked the first year that the yearling class was deleted from the program. It was decided that yearlings are not in their most attractive stage in October, because of this, the class seemed to suffer both in quantity and quality. The prize money for the two-year-old class was doubled which made this the second largest purse for two-year-olds in 2006 and the class boosted six top two-year-olds to compete for $24,187.46.
It was the 2004 All American Cup weanling winner and reserved Bluegrass Futurity weanling, Mosette to take home first place and $10,434.36, bringing her earnings to date to $103,000. Mosette is sired by Sir William Robert and out of Sadie’s Lady. Brookhill’s Kool As Ice was the reserve winner for the O’Brien Family Trust with Rob Tanner at the lines. CH Harlem Town is the sire and CH It’s A Beautiful Day is the dam of this outstanding two-year-old who won $5,796.87.
Dr. Alan R. Raun who has been a big supporter of the Bluegrass Futurity had two strong entries both sired by Haven’s Hero. Louie Lowe exhibited Magic Hero, who is out of Magic Talk, and Fire Hero who is out of Reedann’s Wild Phire was exhibited by Dr. Alan R. Raun, taking home third and fourth place and winning cumulatively $5,796.87 for Dr. Raun. Danette Musselman showed the 2005 Bluegrass Futurity Yearling winner, Deguello, sired by Rifles And Roses and out of Classiphied Edition for Dale Musselman to win $1,159.37 for fifth place. And to round out an outstanding group of two-year-olds was the Only Man In Town gelding, Man Of Liberty, shown by Jennifer Townsend for owners Heidi Dunniway/Richard Gustafson/Man Of Freedom and Four Willows Farm. Man Of Liberty is out of the mare Liberty Day.
The weanling class was high in quality this year. It is a blessing to see how the limited breeders’ programs are benefiting our industry by promoting the breeding of top quality individuals. Max Ciampoli made his first appearance at the Bluegrass Futurity with two top weanlings. The Lady Chablis was a picture of elegance and animation and took home the blue ribbon and $30,062.39 for owners Paul and Rebecca Dieckman. The Lady Chablis is by Jim Stewart’s stallion, Gypsy Santana, and out of Celine Dion. Ciampoli’s other entry was Master Of The Universe who took home third place and $10,209.39 for owner Mary Sue Walker. Master Of The Universe is sired by Uhlen Branch and out of Liberty Day, also the dam of the Man Of Liberty.
Bill Waller and I’m Grande, just recently reserve in the All American Cup, made their presence known at the Bluegrass Futurity. I’m Grande, a big colt whose name is appropriate, was a picture of power and animation to take home $17,015.60 and the reserve ribbon for owner Happy Valley Farm. I’m Grande is sired by I’m The Prince and out of Steel Hearted Woman and is a full brother to World Champion Grande Gil. Nelson Green owner/trainer presented Mirror Me to the fourth place ribbon and $6,806.30. Mirror Me is out of the World Champion mare, CH Time’s Mirrored ERB and sired by CH Harlem Town. Stallions Promise Keeper, Stonewall Above Airs, Leatherwood’s Starlight and Country Treasure were the sires of the remaining top eight ribbon winners.
The Bluegrass Futurity prize money is raised from stud fees auctioned off at the annual auction. Seventy-five percent of the winnings are awarded to the weanling or two-year-old winners and 25 percent of the winnings are awarded to the stallion owner. This gives the stallion owner an incentive to donate breeding to the annual auction. In addition to the prize money awarded, David Freedman of Freedman Harness handcrafts a weanling show halter and show bridle headstall for the winner of the respective classes. A Cindy Wolf bronze is giving to the winner of each class to take home for one year. In addition, each participant is awarded a beautiful bronze participation medallion.
This year’s annual Stallion Auction will be held Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007. For more information regarding the Bluegrass Futurity and to donate a stallion, contact Melissa Moore at (859)533-6225 or mmoore8059@aol.com.
