UPHA Chapter 14 Scholarship Recipients



Chapter 14 of The United Professional Horsemen’s Association offers an educational scholarship annually. Two scholarships for $2,000.00 were offered for 2008. These scholarships are available to applicants who are high school seniors or college freshmen. Applicants must be UPHA Chapter 14 Junior or Associate members or the child of an Active UPHA Chapter 14 member.

There were a record-breaking number of applications submitted for the 2008 scholarships. The applications were unusually impressive in terms of their excellence, so the scholarship committee decided to award three scholarships and encourage applicants, all of whom were high school seniors, to reapply again next year.

The three winners for 2008 are Jessica Sebring, Christine Harb and Nicole Lesniewski.

Jessica is active in her parents’ Sebring Stables training and showing activities. She is currently involved in an internship program at the famed Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Jessica has been accepted at Niagara University’s College of Hospitality and Tourism. She says, "I see this as a perfect fit for me. I love people; travel and helping people have a good time. … this is the kind of life I grew up in. Caring for people and making sure they are enjoying their time at a horse show has always been an important part of what I saw going on back at the barn."

Christine Harb has been heavily involved in the American Morgan Horse Association’s youth program. In fact, she won the National Reserve Youth of the Year title in both 2006 and 2007 and is currently the AMHA Youth Council national secretary. Christine also set and achieved high goals within the Girl Scouts program where she is both a Silver and Gold recipient. Christine will be attending The University of Wisconsin in the fall where she will study equine veterinary medicine.

Nicole Lesniewski has a passion and commitment to the equine industry. She has worked with a number of different trainers, including an internship with Todd Miles at DeLovely, in her effort to gain as much experience as possible for her career plan to become a professional trainer. Nicole is presently working for David Arnold while continuing her phenomenal academic record and activities as she completes her senior year of high school. In September, Nicole will attend Stephens College in the equine studies program.

Congratulations to all three of the very deserving winners of this year’s UPHA Chapter 14 scholarships.
