UPHA Accepting Nominations for Year-End Awards



The United Professional Horsemen's Association is now accepting nominations for the following awards: Richard E. Lavery Professional Horseman of the Year Award; Harry Sebring Professional Horseman of the Year Award; Tony C. Ray Young Professional of the Year Award; Associate Membership Award and the National Honor Show

Nominations are due November 1, 2023.


Nominations must be submitted in writing or via email detailing why the candidate is deserving of the honor. Nominations should be emailed to [email protected], or mailed to UPHA, 4059 Iron Works Parkway, Suite 2, Lexington KY 40511.

Richard E. Lavery Professional Horseman of the Year Award

The Richard E. Lavery Professional Horseman or Horsewoman of The Year shall be a person (can be a couple/partner) involved in the training and showing of horses and ponies within our industry. He or she shall be a person who has given beyond the call of duty to promote the show horse industry and his or her profession, and to inform, educate, and promote in general. He or she shall be dedicated to the industry in an unselfish manner and shall have an interest in the industry and the respect of the profession and the professional horseman.

Harry Sebring Professional Horseman of the Year Award

The Harry M. Sebring Professional Horseman or Horsewoman of the Year shall be a person or persons (can be a couple/partner) that has been involved in the training and showing of Morgan horses within our industry. He or she shall be a person who has given beyond the call of duty to promote the show horse industry and his or her profession, and to inform, educate, and promote in general. He or she shall be dedicated to the industry in an unselfish manner and shall have an interest in the industry and the respect of the profession and the professional horseman.

Tony C. Ray Young Professional of the Year Award

The recipient of this award, (can be a couple or partner) must possess and exhibit the values inherent to what the UPHA represents. He/she must show their ability to work in an unselfish manner on behalf of the industry as a whole, both on the chapter level and National level. They must exhibit an excellent work ethic, value and seek the opinions of others, and be of a kind nature to all.

Associate Membership Award

The Associate Member Award shall be awarded to an Associate Member of UPHA who played a key role in collaborating with professionals to develop meaningful initiatives for the betterment of the UPHA and the industry as a whole. He or she went above and beyond the call of duty to provide their time, talents, and resources for the specific benefit of the UPHA. This individual promoted the Associate Membership to owners throughout the industry, fostering involvement, increased membership and education about UPHA. He or she acted as an advocate to UPHA on the benefits of owner involvement to the Association and also advocated to the industry, the mission, activities and accomplishments of the UPHA.

National Honor Show

The UPHA National Honor Show Award will be presented to the show that meets the standards of the professional horsemen/horsewomen and the show horse industry. The following criteria shall be taken into consideration: the show arena, the warm-up ring, the footing and lighting in each, the safety and number of stalls available, facilities for caretakers, and parking for the exhibitors. In addition to the physical aspects, the attitude of show management and its willingness to work with the exhibitors and the professionals for a better horse show, as well as the promotion of the show and the horse industry in general, through effective and innovative ways shall also be taken into consideration.
