South Central Hackney Association Annual Awards Banquet And Business Meeting

MT. OLIVET, Ky. - The SCHA annual awards banquet was held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at the Blue Licks State Resort Lodge in Mt. Olivet, Ky. Warren Featherston gave the invocation and a buffet meal preceded the meeting. President Roger Sims called the meeting to order. He thanked everyone for coming and recognized those special guests in attendance. Each horse show manager was given an opportunity to announce their show dates and any changes in their program. Sue Alexander announced that there will be a spring horse show at Harrodsburg on April 19-21. Terry Griesinger said the Spring Hackney Sales will be held April 6-7 in Shelbyville.

The following slate of officers and directors were presented for 2007: Roger Sims-President, Joey Buerkley-First Vice President, Bill Bray-Second Vice President, Debbie Sauer-Secretary/Treasurer, Warren Featheston-Reporter. Directors for 2007, 2008, 2009 are Warren Featherston, Jerry Bedinghaus, Bill Sauer and Sharon Lewis.

Several new initiatives for 2007 were announced.

Lisa Cox Sparrow announced that SCHA will sponsor a college scholarship and stated that she has applications available for any SCHA member who is interested in applying.

Steve Rardin explained that SCHA is trying to encourage shows to add classes for older going ponies. SCHA will raffle a pedal sulky and a set of Miller Show Harness with the proceeds going to the older pony classes. The shows and classes will be identified and information will be sent out to members. Raffle tickets are $10 and 200 tickets will sold. The sulky and harness will be given away during the SCHA Pony Breeders Futurity at Alexandria Fair and Horse Show during Labor Day Weekend.

Joe Jenkins stated that SCHA will produce 2007 membership calendar. Full page ads are $100 and business card ads are $25. The calendars will be ready by the Spring Hackney Sale in Shelbyville and distributed to members. Each paid membership will receive a calendar.

Ron Burcham reminded members that SCHA is still participating in the Southern States rebate program and to send proofs of purchase to him at Ron Burcham, 1804 Graves Rd., Hebron, KY 41048.

This year SCHA board of directors incorporated the South Central Hackney Association Hall of Fame Award to honor those who have substantial contributions to SCHA and the Hackney breed. SCHA Hall of Fame Awards were presented to Robert Leonard Hudnall of Lawrenceburg, J. R. Bradley of Shelbyville and John Robinson of Versailles. Warren Featherston read Mr. Hudnall’s biography and presented a plaque to Melanie Hudnall Denny, granddaughter of Leonard Hudnall. Lisa Cox Sparrow listed J. R. Bradley’s numerous contributions to the Hackney show world and accepted the award on his behalf. Both Mr. Hudnall’s and Mr. Bradley’s health did not allow them to attend, therefore, members signed cards and well wishes were sent to both of them.

John Robinson, along with his wife, Winnie, and his children, accepted his Hall of Fame plaque. The Robinsons also celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Jan. 31. Lisa Cox Sparrow listed the numerous stables, horses and ponies that Robinson has been affiliated with during the many years he has trained and shown ponies and horses. Steve Rardin told several humorous stories about Robinson and his show day experiences.

Bill Sauer and Roger Sims presented the high point champion and reserve champion awards. The junior exhibitors in attendance were honored with blue ribbons. Charlotte Goodman won the door prize a beautiful flower arrangement.

Auctioneer Larry Burcham started the annual trash and treasure auction off and thanked those who donated items to the auction. The trash and treasure auction netted $1,200.
