Obituary – Steve Hanks




A noted horseman and dear friend to many, Steve Hanks passed away at his residence on Monday, December 3 at the age of 66. Born July 24, 1952 in Statesville, North Carolina, he was the son of Harold Hanks and the late Frances Foster Hanks.

Hanks enjoyed a successful career as a trainer of American Saddlebreds and road horses, which he particularly loved. In 2013, he was inducted into the American Road Horse and Pony Association (ARHPA) Hall of Fame. Additionally, Hanks was honored during his career with the UPHA Herman Miles Horse Show Manager of the Year and the American Saddlebred Association of the Carolinas (ASAC) Trainer of the Year.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, December 5 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of the Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Hank’s name to the UPHA Dewey Henderson Benevolent Fund.
