Obituary – Michael Eugene Ohlson




Michael Eugene Ohlson, beloved husband, father, and cherished member of his community, passed away on November 13, 2023 at the age of 70. Born on November 5, 1953 in Abingdon, Virginia, to the late Elizabeth Kernan Ohlson and Eugene Ohlson, Michael's life was filled with love, joy, and dedication. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Judy Ohlson and Anne Ohlson. 

Michael was a loving husband to his wife Debra Fleenor Ohlson for an incredible 46 years. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two wonderful children. His daughters, Amanda Ohlson and Ashley Greer (Gene), were the shining lights of his world. Michael adored watching them show horses and treasured every moment spent with his barn family. Most recently Amanda drove Hederestthedevil to a Top 3 the 2023 World’s Championship Horse Show. Also, he is survived by his special little buddy, Jacob Melvin and niece, Ali Collins.

Education played a vital role in Michael's life as he attended Abingdon High School and Virginia Tech. With determination and passion for his field of work, Michael dedicated an astounding 45 years as a Mine Superintendent in Coal. His unwavering commitment and expertise left an indelible mark in the industry. 
Michael “Grizz” had many passions outside of work as well. For an astounding 55 years, he served with the Beech Mountain National Ski Patrol. This showed his love for adventure and helping others in times of need. He was also actively involved with the American Road Horse & Pony Association. He loved his motorcycles, the outdoors and golfing.

In celebration of Michael's remarkable life, there will be a visitation held at Pleasant View Methodist Church on November 16, 2023 at 5:00 - 7:00 P.M., with a service following at 7:00 P.M., with Gerald McKinney and Barbara Farmer officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday at Forest Hills Memory Park. Pallbearers will be Ron Patrick, Jim Herd, Jeff Birks, Ken Hale, Michael Stanford and Michael Baxley. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Watson, Doug Harris, Terry Gordon, Henry Keith, and members of the Beach Mountain National Ski Patrol. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Beech Mountain National Ski Patrol, C/O Unit 20,. P.O. Box 1118, Banner Elk, NC 28604 or the American Road Horse & Pony Association, 2755 Bunten Rd., Duluth, GA 30096 in Michael's honor.
