Obituary: Marcella Aikman



Marcella Lucile Smith Aikman, 93, of Indianapolis, Ind., the mother of former ASHA president Jim Aikman, died Nov. 30. She was the co-founder with her husband, George, of G.V. Aikman Co., and served as vice president for 59 years until her retirement in 1995. She also co-founded Camp Olivet and was the vice president of the Olivet Foundation.

Aikman is survived by her son Jim Aikman, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Jim Aikman who in addition to being a former president of the American Saddlebred Horse Association also heads the All American Yearling Breeder’s Classic and is a well-known breeder and exhibitor.

Services were held Dec. 5, at Southminster Presbyterian Church where Mrs. Aikman was a member. Burial was at Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Olivet Foundation, a non-profit organization that governs Camp Olivet near Bedford, Ind. Camp Olivet is a non-denominational Christian retreat in southern Indiana founded more than 30 years ago by the Aikman family.
