Obituary - Lee Cloud



Lee Cloud, 74, of Donnellson, Iowa passed away January 10 at Iowa City’s University of Iowa Hospital. Cloud died of a massive heart attack. He was born June 3, 1936 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the son of William and Madaline Mae Cloud. He is survived by a sister, Elise (Gary) McAvoy of Sun City West, Arizona as well as nieces and nephews. Cloud was preceded in death by his parents.

Cloud was an avid horse lover and a highly respected trainer of American Saddlebreds. He started his career as a teenager working for Ted Thompson at his breeding farm, show stable and horse rental facility in Burlington, Iowa where he learned his trade, specializing in developing young horses for customers from Kentucky, Colorado and California. Cloud started many horses that went on to be champions for others.

He not only had talent with horses, he also had a deep compassion for people in need. Cloud devoted much of his time to help the disadvantaged. He volunteered at the food pantry Meals on Wheels, the YMCA and other organizations.

A memorial has been set up to donate trophies at the Great River Benefit Horse Show in his honor.
