Obituary – Joseph “Joe” Crawford Harrod




Joseph “Joe” Crawford Harrod, 23 of Shelbyville, Kentucky, passed away in an automobile accident in North Carolina on Saturday, September 22.

Harrod was a member of the Finchville Baptist Church. He was a 2013 graduate of Collins High School and attended Bluegrass Community College. He had many loves in his life, including baseball as an umpire. Harrod was a huge Boston Red Sox fan and he loved music and playing guitar.

Like many in his family, Harrod was also a lover of Hackney ponies. Under the direction of his uncle, Rodney Hicks, Harrod and Heartland River Dance won the 2010 World’s Champion of Champions Junior Exhibitor Road Pony 14-17 title. An outstanding young man who was extremely popular with his peers and elders alike, Harrod was also honored with the 2010 American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS) Spirit Of The Medallion award. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Jerry” Harrod; sister, Michelle “Mickey” Harrod; maternal grandparents, Joseph and Ruth Crawford; and paternal grandparents, Maxine and John E. Harrod.
Harrod is survived by his mother, Susanne Harrod, also an avid Hackney exhibitor and sister of Janet Crawford Hicks. He is also survived by brothers, Scott Harrod (Melissa), Chris Harrod (Missy), John Harrod (Samantha), and Shaun Harrod (Shannon). He was also loved by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 26 at the Shannon Funeral Home, 1124 Main Street, Shelbyville, Kentucky 40065. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Fund and to the American Hackney Horse Society.
