Alvena Tomin Ward, mother of California trainer Bill Tomin of Rockridge Farm, passed away June 26, 2007, after a short bout with cancer. Alvena Ward, along with her husband Guy Ward, owned and showed Tennessee Walking Horses and American Saddlebreds for decades which led her son, Bill Tomin, to become a successful trainer with numerous world’s championships crowned under his direction.
Alvena Ward established the Guy Ward Memorial Perpetual Trophy in 1998 at the Del Mar Charity Fair Horse Show in memory of her husband. Just a few short weeks ago, Bill Tomin rode Undulata Prophet to the Five-Gaited Grand Championship for owner Gail Hooker and was presented with the trophy established by his mother.
Alvena Tomin Ward displayed her inimitable style in 1967 when she presented her 12-year-old son Bill Tomin with the trophy after he won a Tennessee Walking Horse class at the Santa Barbara National Horse Show.
