Obituary – Dale Stone

The show horse industry is saddened to learn of the unexpected death of organist Dale Stone, 78, of Bufort, Georgia. In addition to being the organist for many shows across the country for decades, he also played the organ for the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks for more than 20 years.
Stone attended college on a baseball scholarship but made music his career. Self-taught, he played the organ by ear.
“He couldn’t read a note,” said photographer and longtime friend Doug Shiflet. “His style was a little jazzier than some. He put his own spin on songs, especially several hymns that he played.
“Dale was a strong Christian and was not ashamed of his faith. He gave God the glory for all of his successes. Dale was always smiling and loved people in general. He was never too busy to stop and talk to you and always asked about your family. He kept everything light and would even make fun of his own health issues. He didn’t complain.”
Among his shows, Stone served the Pro-Am Charity for what would have been 40 years this year. Others included Asheville Lions Club, Bonnie Blue, J.D. Massey, the North Carolina State Championship, the North Carolina State Fair, ASAC, Syracuse, Pink Ribbon, Tampa Charity and Southeastern Charity.
Stone is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara as well as a daughter Lori, a son, Jeffrey and extended family.
