NEMHA Weekend Getaway



The Annual New England Morgan Horse Association (NEMHA) Getaway was held Friday, January 24 - Sunday, January 26 at the Hyatt Regency in Newport, RI with Maura Sweeney-Reeve acting as Convention Chairman. Attendees spent Friday enjoying the amenities at the Hyatt as well as the Newport mansions and nearby shopping.

A well attended clinic was held on Saturday at Stonegate Farm in nearby Portsmouth, RI. A mini judges school along with demonstrations of most of the show ring disciplines were conducted by Harry Sebring, Cindy Mugnier, Marsha Shepard, Barbara Irvine, Dottie Brittingham, Rick Stevens, Earleen Kenyon and Jim Ummel. The crowd of over 100 warmed up in the heated tent in the indoor arena to enjoy a fashion show presented by Marsha Shepard during the lunch break. The afternoon concluded with a much applauded presentation of Stonegate Farm's world champion stallions.

Saturday evening's AMHA Banquet and Awards Dinner was also a great success with almost 200 in attendance. Many of the award winners listed below were in attendance to accept their awards. Christine Nava was surprised and delighted as she was voted NEMHA Horsewoman of the Year. After dinner and the awards, many attendees stayed to dance and socialize. On Sunday morning AMHA Executive Director Fred Braden spoke to a crowd at breakfast. He spoke about the future of AMHA and the Morgan Horse. He also answered numerous questions from the floor. The breakfast ended with the NEMHA annual meeting and a board of directors meeting.

Connecticut Morgan and Johnna Chenail from Nob Hill sponsored a Youth Horse Bowl Contest which boasted 32 youngsters participating. After Horse Bowl they were treated to a Pizza and Pool Party before their journey home. The NEMHA Getaway Weekend came at perfect time in a cold and snowy New England winter for Morgan aficionados to gather.
