Maine Morgan Hosts Kentucky Derby Party 2009

Submitted By Judy Dorr

The date of May 2 and Cabot Morgan Farm set the stage for the second annual Kentucky Derby Party. Hosted by the Maine Morgan Breeder’s Classes, this gala event was attended by horse enthusiasts from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Sue Oliver, chair of the event, didn’t miss a detail for the evening. All participants were in the midst of "Churchills"(not downs, but close enough), who were fabulous caterers for the Derby Party. From the pre-race social hour, to the race event seen on a movie theater sized screen and buffet dinner, to the spectacular live auction and derby hat contest, party-goers had a evening filled with fun, friends and memories. The running of the 135th Kentucky Derby Party excitement just added to the hype of the night as the long shot entry, Mine That Bird, made the race itself an event to remember, coming from behind to win by a wide margin.

But what would a Derby Party be without a Derby Hat Contest? This year’s participants went above and beyond. The lucky winners will be guests of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Party: Luanne Piccione (biggest hat), Shannon Fielder (most creative) and Paulette Brim (most original). The gala evening was capped off with a fabulous live auction under the direction of auctioneer Shane Oliver. All proceeds of the party go to hosting the Maine Morgan Breeder’s Classes. A special thanks goes to Rick Lane and Cabot Morgan Farm for their continued support, offering his facility to host this fabulous evening. If you missed this event this year, put it on your plans for 2010. You will be glad you did!
