St. Louis Adds Pairs Competition

The pairs competition will return to the St. Louis National Charity Horse Show in September 2003.

Once a very popular competition of pairs of riders mounted on matching horses and riding side-by-side, pairs classes have all but disappeared from the horse show world in recent years while the emphasis has switched to more powerful, more spectacular performance horses.

The St. Louis show is going to offer pairs in both English (Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat or Side Saddle) and Western classes, opening the competition to professionals and amateurs alike. The classes will also be open to both Saddlebreds and Arabians. The English pairs class is scheduled for the Thursday evening session and the Western class will be held on Friday evening.

Article 1699T of the USA-E rules (Arabian section) focuses on “uniformity as a pair, performance, quality and manners” as the judging standards. The St. Louis pairs classes will follow that rule with the addition that the classes will be open to all riders.

Dates for this year’s St. Louis National are Sept. 23-27 at the National Equestrian Centre in Lake Saint Louis, Mo.
