Jerry Allister Smith Passes Away

Jerry Allister Smith, husband of Jan Hopkins Smith, departed his earthly life on Thursday, September 17, 2009 following a period of declining health.

A native of Greenville County, South Carolina, Jerry was born April 4, 1949 to Helen Callaham Smith and the late Allister G. Smith. He was owner of Shadowfax Stables in Marietta, SC, and was a partner in Smith Plastering Company and Smith Sales. He attended Gardner-Webb University and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

As an avid sportsman, Jerry believed time shared with young people built both character and great memories. He shared many hours fishing, shrimping, hunting and riding horses with family and friends. In the 1950’s, Jerry and his father maintained a show string of over 20 American Saddlebred horses in training with the late Dewey Henderson both at Cleveland Park Stables and the Dewey Henderson Stables in Greenville, SC. They showed at major shows around the Southeast for many years. The Smith’s owned and stood the stallions Bourbon Masterpiece and American Dictator- sire of Local Talent. One of Jerry’s favorite horses on their show string was the grand old five-gaited campaigner, Sound Barrier. Although Jerry had not been active in the Saddlebred business for some years, he always managed to attend the JD Massey horse show each year and never lost his love of the American Saddlebred.
