Helen K. Crabtree Equitation Instructor Of The Year: Jo Cornell

Editor's Note: The Helen K. Crabtree Equitation Instructor of the Year Award was presented by Kim Crumpler on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at the UPHA/AHHS Convention.
Jo Cornell, the daughter of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Whitney, was honored during the 2002 UPHA Convention as the Helen Crabtree Equitation Instructor of the Year. The highlight of the presentation was a video of Jo as a child trying to keep up with her brother, Phil, as they raced bareback down the driveway at Whitney Stables. Somehow, she just couldn’t quite do it.

Among her many accomplishments were blue ribbons awarded to her horses and riders at the Kentucky State Fair and at major horse shows across the country. Among those riders were Jo’s own daughters, Blake and Midge, and their home-bred mare Hidden Return. Others included Bryant Beltle, Lauren Pope, Megan Jacob, Michelle Powell and Paige Kordenbrock in the equitation ranks. Included in the performance divisions were Vivacious, Maximillion and Ross Beltle, Boardroom Ace and Callaway’s Career Girl.

Kim Crumpler had this to say about Cornell "Jo's enthusiasm for teaching all riders, of all ages and abilities, is one of the things that makes her so unique and what makes her so special. She gives all of herself to all of her riders and doesn't play favorites."
