Going For The Gold - The 2006 Gold Cup Regional

by Sasha Klein

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio- The 2006 Morgan Gold Cup Regional celebrated its 46th anniversary from June 13-17 at the
Midwest Livestock & Expo Center, newly renamed the Champions Center, in Springfield, Ohio. A new look this year was provided by the generosity of Kohler Stables, allowing for the addition of lovely and useful wrought iron tables and chairs for box seating at the out-gate end of the arena. For the second year in a row, most of the approximately 250 horses were stabled in the main barn, some barns continued to use the outside stalls. However, no one asked to use any of the facilities located in the barns marked “Goats”, “Cattle” or “Oxen”!

At this show the mood was upbeat and the parties were plentiful. The popular Chuck-A-Duck competition was held daily for the first time this year. Terry King’s annual ice cream social was well attended on Thursday evening and the large and festive progressive barn party on Friday night was, as always, a success. Friday night was further enhanced by the spectacle of the baby miniature horse in a bathmat accompanied Little Bo-Peep to win the costume class along with the nerve-wracking Ride-A-Buck classes. The piéce de resistance of the evening was the mock 50th birthday party (four years and five months early!) held for photographer Howie Schatzberg by Shayna Butts of Grove Pointe in a long-standing battle of one-upsmanship.

Judges for the 2006 Morgan Gold Cup Regional included Lisa Waller, Cindy Mugnier and Elaine Gibala. Show Manager Guy Brown did his usual job of making everything run like clockwork, while Dennis Rumsey served as announcer and John Frye as ringmaster. Other show officials included: Show Secretary Judy McManama, barn manager Bob Fraunfelder, USEF Steward Nancy Noble, organist Nancy Roberts, paddock master Buddy Waggoner, farrier Tim Lawrence, veterinarian Dr. Michael Schmall and videographer Shary Hill Shooter Video Productions. Completing successful weeks, Kali Erin Hutchinson was named High Point Junior Exhibitor, while High Point Amateur of the show was Lora Lyons.

IN-HAND

On Tuesday evening the in-hand division started off the show. While numbers were low, quality was high and this competition featured several highly anticipated entries. World Champion Sheza Bell triumphed in the in-hand mare competition, taking home the Grand Champion Mare, Senior Champion Mare and Five and Over Mare titles for Barbara and Arthur Jones, making trainer Judy Whitney Harris very proud. Barbara and Max Rudicel’s Raintree Celine made a stunning entrance to be named Reserve Grand Champion Mare and Reserve Senior Champion Mare, with the win in the Three and Four-Year-Old Mare class for trainer John Hufferd. Junior Champion Mare honors, and well as reserve in the Two Year Old Fillies class, went to Legendary Diamonz Aflaire, shown by Judy Whitney Harris for J.D. and Sue Symer. LBJ Uptown Girl was a stylish presence to win the Two Year Old Fillies class, and then took the Reserve Junior Champion Mare tricolor with Tim Roesink for Copper Beech Morgan Farm. And representing the little ones, As Time Goes By, trained by Roy Harris, took home the Yearling and Under Fillies title for owners Mike and Patty Postiglione.

The gelding division featured World Champion SpringMill Medicine Man opening the season as Grand Champion Gelding for Byron and Joan Weir. This fine gelding also won the Three and Four-Year-Old Gelding class to begin a winning evening for handlers Bill and Sammi Hazen. The Reserve Grand Champion Gelding, who was also reserve in the Three and Four-Year-Old Gelding class, was KH Show Byz shown by John Hufferd for Chuck and Pam Blossom. Winner of the Five and Over Gelding class was Ability, shown by Michael Slomkowski for Showcase Stables.

The stallion division, though not large, showcased two world-titled Morgans, one entering the ring with a new owner and partner and the other enjoying a much-anticipated return to the show ring. Mizrahi, surrounded by his new family at PlayMor Farm, swept the stallion division, winning the Grand Champion Stallion, Senior Champion Stallion and Five and Over Stallion titles with tail-flagging performances to the delight of his loving trainer Sammi Hazen. Town Assets, owned and shown by Lynn Peeples, swept the reserve titles in these three events, making a tricolor return to the show ring as well. The Three and Four-Year-Old Stallion class was won by Uppertown Just In Caisse, shown by Michael Slomkowski for Debbie Lamay. The Junior Champion Stallion, also winner of the Two-Year-Old Stallion class, was Harlan Star Material shown by John Hufferd for Blue Ribbon Morgans. Reserve in both of these events was the flashy Rage shown by Jason Wolfe for Anne Morgan. And again representing the babies, OFS French Lieutenant, owned and shown by Tom Roe, took home the Yearling and Under Colt title.

PARK SADDLE

The 2006 Gold Cup audience was treated to the debut of two-time Park Harness World Champion HVK Vibrance under the Memory Lane Farm banner for owners Shipyard Point Morgans. Every eye in the arena was on Jenny Taylor as she rode this grand stallion to the victory in both the Open Park Saddle qualifier and Saturday night’s championship. Barbara and Arthur Jones’ multi-titled Bellisimo took home the tricolor in Ladies’ Park Saddle for the third year in a row, trained and perfectly presented by Judy Whitney Harris, while MEM Like No One Else, owned and shown by Misty Pleiness, took the reserve.

In the amateur division Shelley Silber and her Grand National Champion partner MEM Heart And Soul won both the Park Saddle Amateur qualifier and the Park Saddle Amateur Championship in their season debut, trained by Tim Roesink. Donna Zimmerman has done well moving her world-titled Patchwork Simply Amazin from the junior to the senior ranks under the tutelage of Jim and Jenny Taylor. This pair took the reserve in both the qualifier and the Amateur Park Saddle Championship.

Although a number of the park saddle classes only had one entry, the quality was high and captured the interest of the audience. Winning the Park Saddle Junior Exhibitor Stake was Dragonsmeade Accolade, ridden by Rosie Seitz for Susan and Christy Sunday. The Park Saddle Limit Horse class was won by HDP Noble Warrior, owned and shown by Paula Messier under the Crystal Farms banner.

In their debut drive, Jacqueline Clapp showed her fancy new partner HVK Constantinoble to the reserve in the Park Harness Ladies class for PlayMor Farm.

The Park Harness Amateur Stake proved to be one of the high points of this show. Two world champions provided a class worthy of Oklahoma. When the dust cleared it was Evolution, owned and shown by Donna Zimmerman, who took the tricolor, bringing smiles to the faces of her trainers Jim and Jenny Taylor. In only their second class together, HVK Constantinoble and Jacqueline Clapp had the loud backing of the entire Hazen family as they drove up for the reserve tricolor. In the Park Harness Junior Exhibitor Stake the world champion team of FZM Encore and Sasha Klein took the championship honors for the second year in a row, directed by trainers Lynn and Kathy Peeples and owners/parents Serena Brown and Bob Klein.

With no four-year-old entries, the three-year-olds dominated the Junior Park Harness classes. The Park Harness Junior Championship as well as the Park Harness Three-Year-Old class was won by Saralin Joy Ride, shown by Tim Roesink for Saralin Morgan Farm. Watch Me Dance took reserve in both the championship and the qualifier, shown by Tim O’Gorman for Sally Sliman.
