A rash of top horses have reportedly died within the last few weeks and headlining that group was the March 22 death of the former two-times world’s champions and world’s champion producing sire Sultan’s Great Day. An icon for Belle Reve for many years, Great Day sired some of our top show horses including world’s grand champions CH Winter Day and CH Simply Mahvalous.
Another quality breeding stallion, Shamrock Santana, also passed away in the month of March. This full brother to Ladies Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion CH Santana Lass produced some thrilling world title holders for Vickie Keatley and Jennie Graham.
Sad news came from Doreen Weston’s Smoke Hollow Farm that her beloved walk-trot mare CH Jane Doe also died in early March at the age of 13. This many times champion will be missed, especially in the Northeast where she was champion time and time again.
The latest passing came just this week with the heralded former equitation mount Whata Wise Guy. Being used as a lesson horse at Biggins Stables, this former world and national champion made sharper riders out of several different junior exhibitors throughout his career.
Saddle Horse Report will have complete stories on this group of champions in the next issue.
