Attention Small “r” and Learner Judge Applicants

If you are interested in judging opportunities, the UPHA Associate membership recommends the following:

* Obtain the names of show managers for shows in which you are interested. These names may be found on the UPHA web site, www.uphaonline.com or by calling Larry Gilpin, Chair - UPHA Associate’s Judges Committee - 612-770-3982.

* Write a brief cover letter requesting future consideration to the show manager along with a one page resume outlining your background, experience with horses, judging experience, etc. State in your cover letter whether you are a small “r” judge desiring assignments or a learner.

* It is the responsibility of the learner judge to contact the manager of a USAE show in which acceptance as a learner is desired and request to be considered.

* If the show manager agrees to having you as a learner judge then ask who the other judges will be.

* It is then the responsibility of the learner to contact the other judges for that show and ask their permission to be allowed to serve with them.

* Only licensed judges can officiate at an USAE show. The learner is there to learn and it is hoped that the licensed judges will share their knowledge with them.

* If the other judges agree then it is up to the learner to acquire, fill out and turn in a USAE learner card application form. This signed application form with a $40 fee must reach the USAE office a minimum of 21 days prior to the start of the competition.

* These application forms may be obtained by contacting USA Equestrian - 4047 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511, phone - 859-258-2472 - licensed officials department.

* The forms are also downloadable at www.equestrian.org. Hit “downloads and publications” - then select “download area” followed by “licensed officials,” then “learner card application form.”

* If you need information on upcoming judges clinics contact USAE - 859-258-2472.

* If you have further questions, or if you are a learner judge but did not attend the recent judges clinic, please send us your name, address and phone number. We are compiling a learner judges list to be made available to the show managers.

* Contact - Larry Gilpin 612-770-3982, the UPHA office.
