ASHA and USEF Youth Awards Announced

Lexington, Ky. – The American Saddlebred Horse Association offers a new youth award this year, the Academy Master Medal Award, and the United State Equestrian Federation (USEF) has announced it will continue to honor youth with its second annual Youth Sportsman’s Charter Award.

The Master Medal Award goes beyond the ASHA Academy Awards program, offering participants an opportunity to advance to a higher level after earning their first gold medal in the Academy Awards Medal program. The Master Medal Awards program encourages participation in promotion, education and continued involvement with the American Saddlebred. Master Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded based on accumulation of riding and activity points. Points will be tabulated for the show year, beginning October 1 and ending September 30 (for 2007 award, points retroactive to October 1, 2006). For more information, including rules and points required for medals, click on the following link: http://www.saddlebred.com/html/files/master_medal_award.pdf.

The second annual USEF Youth Sportsman’s Charter Award recognizes youth who are members of both USEF and a recognized national affiliate, such as ASHA. Candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment and dedication to USEF and their affiliate organization by serving as a role model for their peers and through the promotion of the horse. The program’s goal is designed to develop youth into leaders in the equine industry from all breeds and disciplines.

To be considered for the award, the following criteria must be met:

• Active membership in good standing with the USEF and a recognized national affiliate
• At the time of application, the youth must be age 17 or under
• Demonstrate an ongoing commitment and dedication to the promotion of the horse
• Serve as a positive role model for peers
• Participate at any level of competition, including local, regional or national events
• Exhibit characteristics that exemplify positive sportsmanship principles

Nominations for ASHA youth must be made to ASHA by Monday, October 1, 2007. Entries may be sent to ASHA, Attn: Brenda Newell, 4083 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511. Nominations may also be e-mailed to b.newell@asha.net. ASHA will select a nominee from each USEF region and submit that list to USEF, which will choose one national nominee. A recipient will be chosen by USEF in November and the honor will be presented at the USEF Annual Meeting in January, 2008.
