Dayton Readies For 150th Horse Show

This is the year to join us and help celebrate our 150th Dayton Horse Show, Aug 2-5 at the historic Montgomery County Fairgrounds, Dayton, Ohio. Unfortunately while other shows have had to close their gates, this horse show proves its longevity by the milestone achieved this year. This horse show like others could not have continued without the tremendous support from our owners, trainers, exhibitors, sponsors and advertisers, it is individuals and businesses such as yourselves who we need to thank, and we most certainly do.

This years show is pulling out all the stops to make this horse show indeed something worth remembering. Many wonderful events are planned to include: Equine Wine & Stein, #tastetesthursday, a wine and locally made craft beer at its finest, with a wide array of delicious liquid refreshments. Situated under tent, with dinner prepared by the ever popular El Meson Restaurant, this well attended event will see its third year for what has become a popular event for both non horse and horse lovers everywhere with the opportunity to watch the horse show throughout the evening.

A raffle that has really taken off is the Muck Bucket Raffle, a new, yes, a new, manure bucket overflowing with a wide assortment of wine and liquor. Tickets for this event are $5.00 each and along with everything else goes to support our benefactor The Therapeutic Riding Institute which through the aid of horses works with children, adults and veterans with severe disabilities.

The Trainer’s Brunch, our way of saying Thank You for your support and a chance for trainers both old and new to get acquainted and delight on wonderful food and desserts, also gives trainers a break from the days busy schedules.

Vendors who offer a wide variety of goods from clothing, boots, shirts, hats,  both horse and non horse items, horse equipment, adoptable rescue pets, in conjunction with the Dog Show, and food, food, and more food from food trucks to open air fair food to satisfy most any appetite.

For many years, the horse show has taken pride in recognizing one or more individuals for their contributions to this historic horse show. While the 2017 honoree(s) will not be made available until opening night August 2, it promises to be a wonderful acknowledgment of those so deserving in center ring during the evening session.

With a full schedule of classes for American Saddlebred, Harness/Hackney/Road Ponies, Friesians, Dutch Harness with additional classes added this year for the very popular Dutch Harness, promises to offer some top notch competition.  With the celebration of this horse show, a reunion is planned for both former and current exhibitors to allow them to meet and greet, as well as tell of their experiences at this horse show.  It has not been determined exactly when and at what event this will take place but will make an announcement as soon as more details are released, the horse shows version of a class reunion with photos  yesterday and today made available at the “historic table’’, a look back at yesterday.”

What once was called a horse fair, situated on this hallow ground has brought a new sense of pride to this horse show which has been a staple for the Miami Valley all these years.  What once was a beautiful tree filled park, where the areas people could come and enjoy, the scenery has changed a bit but the heritage, the enjoyment and a place where friends, neighbors and the community as a whole can come and still enjoy what this 27 acres has to offer, days gone by, and days still ahead.  We are awaiting confirmation on our 2017 judge as will let you know as soon as it is confirmed.

Upon arrival/unloading exhibitors will be given water, along with carrots and apples for the horses, and a hospitality tent full of morning time goodies for all to enjoy, just another way for the horse show to say welcome and thank you. The Executive Board of Directors for the Dayton Horse Show Association and the entire Board of Directors cordially invite you to this once in a lifetime celebration showing that if everyone supports as many horse shows as you can it gives all of us the opportunity to venture through new gates, new show rings and new competition.
