Gayle Lampe Receives Horseperson of the Year Award

Gayle Lampe, professor emeritus of equestrian science at William Woods University, recently was awarded Horseperson of the Year by the Missouri Horse Shows Association.

Lampe received the award for her promotion of equestrian activities throughout the world, and particularly through educating young people at William Woods University. The presentation was made Jan. 24 at the Peachtree Convention Center in Columbia, Missouri.

A national and international leader in equestrian science, Lampe is an instructor, coach, trainer, judge and rider. She has trained several William Woods horses to world and national championships and has won many titles with her personal horses, as well.

For more than 40 years, she has been an instrumental force in William Woods University's nationally acclaimed equestrian studies division, where she participated in the development of the country's first four-year academic degree program in equestrian science.

Outside of her impressive show and judging career, Lampe has spent much of her life at WWU. She has been a faculty member since 1968 and has served as the saddle seat program director/professor and as the former chair of the equestrian science division. She obtained her master’s degree in education from William Woods University in 1997.

“It is such a big thrill and honor to receive this award because it encompasses all seats, not just saddle seat,” Lampe said. “It includes everybody that shows with the Missouri Horse Shows Association.”

She added, “It was special to me because I was able to thank Sarah and Landon Rowland personally for helping William Woods get our second large riding arena, rightfully named Rowland Applied Riding Arena.

The Rowlands received the Jeff Shikles Distinguished Service/ Lifetime Achievement Award for their support of the horse business in the Midwest, including their support, through their gifts of time, talent and treasure, of the UPHA American Royal and William Woods University.

“It was a thrill to have all of the WWU equestrian faculty members there to support me and be there for it. Additionally, Lynn Frazee presented the award to me, which made it even more special, as Lynn used to teach Saddle Seat part time at WWU with me. We have been friends for many, many years,” continued Lampe.

Lampe was also awarded "Trainer of the Year" by the MHSA in 1982. More recently, she has been named the American Royal Missouri-Kansas “Horse Person of the Year” in 2002 and was the recipient of the American Riding Instructor’s Association’s “Master Instructor” Award in 2007.
