Jean Mathews Lee - Obituary

Jean Mathews Lee, 87, of Jasper, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, surrounded by her loved ones.
Lee was born in Tuscaloosa on March 8, 1927. A graduate of the University of Alabama and a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Lee was a proud alumnus of Alabama. She married C.A. “Tony” Lee Jr. in 1947. Together, they had three children.

The Lee’s were active in the Jasper community and were closely tied to Walker College. Lee had an intense love for animals. From horses to dogs, they were an equal part of her family. She loved seeing her Morgan horses compete in shows across the country. When she could no longer attend, she enthusiastically watched each event live online whenever possible.

Her dogs also had a very special place in her heart and family. Any animal that became a part of Lee’s life was very lucky indeed and shared in her great love.

Lee was also passionate about diabetes charities and a pioneer in diabetes research in Birmingham — raising a loving daughter from her diagnosis at age one. She was particularly involved with the diabetes doctors and staff at what is now Trinity Hospital and spoke often of her admiration of the staff for helping her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Manley Leviathan Mathews and Minnie Pierson Mathews; her brothers, Bill and Perry Mathews; her husband, C.A. “Tony” Lee Jr.; a daughter, Claire Alexandria Lee; and one grandson, Dylan Lee Edgil.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Ann Walker; daughter, Jeannie M. Lee; son, C.A. “Tony” Lee III (Patrick); granddaughters, Anna Redmill and Alex Edgil; two great-granddaughters, Autumn and Lilli Thornton; and special friends, Francisco Arias, Willa Burton, Dr. Gorman R. Jones III and the staff at Camellia Medical Group.

The family will have a private ceremony, but ask that donations be made in Lee’s memory to the American Diabetes Association at www.donations.diabetes.org/ site/Donation or the American Morgan Horse Educational Trust at www.amhect. org/make-a-donation.
