Louisville - Tuesday Daytime

Priscilla Marconi picked the exact right time to make her best drive at the lines of Spread The Word. She took a unanimous round of honor in the first class of the day, Section One of Show Pleasure Driving. Jim Lowry gave a congratulatory pat on the rump (of the horse not Priscilla) and joined them in the winner’s circle as the trainer of record. By Harlem’s Friendly Conversation and out of Dream About Me, by Merchant Prince, Spread The Word is about as Happy Valley-bred as they come. He was on Priscilla’s West Coast string last year, winning the championship at the California Futurity as part of his qualifying run for this year’s Louisville. Who was the Reserve World’s Champion. The green squiggly line indicating a grammatical error popped up when that sentence was typed, as Microsoft Word demanded a question mark. But no! In fact, the horse’s name is “Who”! Bred to be a good one, the giant bay gelding is by Designed and out of CH Kiss For Luck, long a winner on the East Coast. Cater Stables has teamed Cathy Rogers Holmes and Who, landing them championship wins at Bonnie Blue, Devon, Syracuse, and Blue Ridge already this year. Surprise Kiss and Elaine Earlywine was third for Lukens Stables, with fourth going to the East Coast as well with MBA’s Royal Shadow Phax and Anne Marie Biron for Overtime Farm and trainer Luman Wadhams.

The Four-Year-Old Hackney Pony class featured two good entries, produced by probably the two biggest Hackney breeding operations in the country. Heartland Commendable came out on top today with Andre van Schalkwyk. Andre was also at the lines last year at the Royal to win the UPHA Hackney Pony Classic National Championship for owner Susan Olcott. Darrel Kolkman did the driving a year ago this week as the Three-Year-Old Hackney Pony World’s Champion. A year ago, Regal’s Leah Rae LF was a Reserve World’s Champion as well, but as a harness pony. Still owned by Dan and Leah Light, she was shown today by trainer Bryan Earehart. She is by Dun-Haven Regal Attraction and out of Romeo’s Lori Ann LF.

At some point this industry has to have a frank and earnest conversation about splits, especially at this horse show. The reason being the first split of Adult Five-Gaited Show Pleasure was about as deep as a class can possibly be. The reigning Ladies Amateur Five-Gaited World’s Champion of Champions was in there, along with the reigning Five-Gaited Pleasure World’s Champion of Champions and last year’s Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited Pleasure Reserve World’s Champion of Champions. Let’s throw in yet another world title holder in this division for good measure, plus the balance of the class that looked every bit the part as well. With all of that talent and all of those accolades spread around this class, there was a unanimous winner. That’s how good Break On Through was in his five-gaited pleasure Louisville debut. Laura Elliott has been with this horse since 2010 under the direction of Steve and Tiffany Wheeler. They earned their sixth World’s Championship together here this morning. Undefeated in the division, “Jimmy” swept Bonnie Blue, Rock Creek, Chattanooga/Cleveland Charity, and Blue Ridge, leading up to this whirlwind performance on the green shavings he knows so well. Camille Cowart graduated from junior exhibitor last year in one of the most loaded graduating classes those ranks have ever seen. She has weathered all of the battles of that 14-17 crew, taking those lessons up to these amateur ranks. She took CH What’s The Whoopla to the reserve win here from West Wind Stables. The reigning World’s Champion of Champions, CH Take A Guess was third in this one with Michelle Krentz Partridge riding. Michelle and mom Mary Krentz owned Break On Through when he was the Junior Five-Gaited Reserve World’s Champion of Champions in 2009. CH Titleist Right Tonight was up for fourth with Allyson Ehle riding for Bob and Nancy Ehle. They were reserve champions at Blue Ridge in their last outing.

Maisie Benfield put on a phenomenal show, continuing her dominance this year in the junior equitation division. Still unbeaten in junior competition, she was the 12-13-Year-Old Equitation World’s Champion here with Size Me Up. Trained by Zubrod Stables, Maisie was the UPHA Junior Challenge Cup Reserve National Champion a year ago and captured Lexington’s Junior Equitation Championship just last month. Grace Allison was the Junior Equitation Champion at Blue Ridge last month. She was up for reserve honors here with Number One Girl. Grace is a product of the Kierson Farm program. She was the 12-and-Under Reserve World’s Champion last year.

There needs to be a better term than catch driver/rider for people the likes of Linda Fischer at the lines or David Rudder in the saddle. Mercenary seems too harsh. Professional catch driver carries the wrong connotation. Whatever the answer, Linda gets the call for a lot of top entries when they are in need of a good drive. She came through again today with Heartland Cracker Jack for owner Sandra Surber and her good friends at Majestic Oaks. They were champions at Blue Ridge last month in their first show together. Just a five-year-old, this is Cracker Jack’s first year in this division. Another pony that Linda has shown before with good success and a former entry of Sandra Surber, Catch Me If You Can was the Reserve World’s Champion today with John Wrather. This was a third straight reserve win for this entry of Charlotte Wrather, who took double reserves at Lexington last month. Janet Crampton trains this team now in its second season. A second entry from Majestic Oaks, Night Voyager was third in this first split. Meredithe Steinhauer continued her good week with the yellow prize. Extremely Supreme and Faydelle Schott finished in fourth.

Rose Marie Wheeler and CH Redesigned have taken a victory pass at nearly every horse show they have attended together. Champions at Midwest Charity and Blue Ridge already this year, they were the World’s Champions in Section One of 14-17 Three-Gaited Show Pleasure. This is Rose Marie’s first year in the older age group, keeping up the family tradition, winning back-to-back with mom Linda Fischer here this morning. Showing under the Grey Ridge banner, Linda actually made a catch ride of sorts with this horse last year, sweeping the Adult Show Pleasure division at the North Carolina State Championship Charity. A World’s Champion in 13-and-under a year ago, Callaway’s Nachelle was a Reserve World’s Champion in this older age group this time around. Cheyenne Mabey is another of those killer catch riders. She made this ride for Rose Arbor Farm and trainer Dena Lopez. Nachelle has never been lower than second in any of her five performances in Freedom Hall. She is by Callaway’s Blue Norther and out of Callaway’s Return Engagement. Wild I Am and Jacquelyn King were third in this one, followed by Aussie and Cecelia Bolka for Lisa Ulliman.

Last year, there was an experimental 12-and-under age group here, which was adjusted to 11-and-under this time around, with good results, as two balanced classes were formed out of this junior division. Sofia Rashid returned to the winner’s circle here with one of her best rides yet. She was once again joined by the Meadow Dream team of Jimmy and Georgia Morrison, just as she was in 2012 as the 9-Year-Old Walk-and-Trot World’s Champion. Isabella Privitera is also in her first year cantering, just like Sofia. She was the UPHA Walk-and-Trot Challenge Cup Reserve National Champion a year ago as well as the 9-10 Walk-and-Trot Reserve World’s Champion of Champions. Trained by Missy Hughes Smith, Isabella rides the cute-as-a-button CH Heir’s Halo. Cara DeForge finished in third, with Finn Cooper in fourth.

A four-year-old showing in this 14-17 Show Pleasure Section Two, Brookhill’s Knockout looked like a seasoned veteran, carrying Eleanor Rainbolt Forbes to her third World’s Championship of the week for Rainbow Princess Farms. Trained by DeLovely, this was the best ride yet for Eleanor and the son of Brookhill’s Apollon and CH It’s A Beautiful Day. That mare’s name may sound familiar in this division, as she is also the dam of CH Brookhill’s King Of Kool, a many times World’s Champion in this very division with Jessie Wuesthoefen. Graham Troxell made the show of his young life aboard CH Ms. Betty Grable. He claimed the Reserve World’s Championship honors for Joy Troxell. These two have been in the top prizes all year long, splitting three wins and three reserves over the course of Raleigh, J.D. Massey, and Asheville. They show under the High Caliber banner. CH Three Point Shooter and Kaitlyn Creekmore took the yellow ribbon in third, with Final Deklaration fourth for Margaret Homa.

Three speed demons felt the need for speed in the Amateur Roadster Under Saddle class, with a familiar face continuing to dominate the division. Where Are We Now was the winner in this one for the sixth year in a row with Dr. Brian Garrett. They are undefeated in this class, having not shown here in 2008, there first season together. Stevie Bagdasarian raced to reserve for the second year in a row. She was once again teamed with Eclipse under the Diamond View banner. The jet black jet was making his season debut today.

A deep and competitive field of road ponies under saddle had to be split, with the first division going back one-two to Majestic Oaks. One of the founding fathers of this division so to speak, CH Pure Country has been showing in this division since its inception it seems. He and Lexie Flint put all of their talent on display today to claim their third World’s Championship together. Lexie is now in her fourth Louisville with the fine as a deer speedster for Dr. Robert and Melissa Flint. Sallie Mason Wheeler has no qualms about speed. With a pastime like fox hunting back in her native Virginia, she can’t really feel anything but comfortable aboard any kind of horse or pony. World’s Champion in her qualifier a year ago with A Dazzling Diva and the Reserve World’s Champion of Champions, she picked up the red streamers today for owner Maureen Campbell. Drum Beat and Remi Adams picked up third, as Remi focuses on this fun division following her incredible walk-and-trot career that just wrapped up last season with accolades on top of accolades. Blues Traveler and Abigail Tabor made a good show in fourth for Helen Rich.

Another longtime star of this division, Perfect Offering was a World’s Champion here in 2006. Eight years later, it was more of the same, as Madison Pope rode down victory lane in Section Two of the Road Pony Under Saddle class. Perfect Offering was a surprise presentation to Madison as she sat in the lineup at Kansas City last year. Peter Fenton informed her at that point that the catch ride was not really a catch ride and that the pony was in fact hers. That fairytale continued today with mom Lisa Hillmer and “Uncle Skip” Kent Swalla heading up the victory pass. Mandy Bray and Time To Go were four for four coming into today, settling for the Reserve World’s Championship today. They took a tour of County Fair winner’s circles this year at Boone County Fair, Mercer County Fair, Shelby County Fair, and Burlington Spring. This is their third season together and their best effort to date in Freedom Hall. Mr. Lucky Man and Zoe Schaffel were third for MLS Equestrian, with Hightower and Mackenzie Moore in fourth.

“I guess it never gets old,” said Jennie Turner Garlington as she left the ring with tears of joy aboard Pass With Care. Her new teammate in a division she loves and knows quite well, Pass With Care was named the Five-Gaited Show Pleasure World’s Champion in the second split of that class. Making a good qualifying run with wins at Asheville, Rock Creek, and Shelby County Fair, Pass With Care and Jennie both certainly know the way to the Louisville winner’s circle. Pass With Care was a Junior Five-Gaited Stallion/Gelding World’s Champion in 2011 with Smith Lilly and the Kentucky County Fair Five-Gaited Grand Champion in 2012 with Kristen Bagdasarian. Jennie Garlington’s record in gaited pleasure qualifiers here is about as amazing as they come. How does five for five sound? Her record in this class remained unblemished, having never left the ring in a gaited pleasure qualifier without the blue streamers flowing. The Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited Pleasure World’s Champion of Champions a year ago, Just Heavenly stepped up and answered the call, still teamed with Maya Manilow. They were the Reserve World’s Champions in this one for Barbara Goodman Manilow and Skyline Stables. This was a second Reserve World’s Championship for Maya and Just Heavenly, having taken that prize in 2012 as well. It was a seventh Reserve World’s Championship overall for the beautiful black mare who always seems to be right at the top of the prizes. Kathy Capsuto Walker and Rain were a good third in this group, with Cosmic Venus and Judith Fisher Oetinger in fourth.

Rondo and Emily Candelaria have been hard to stop in 13-and-Under Three-Gaited Show Pleasure. Finishing lower than second just once together, they were the Section One World’s Champions today for Barbara Woods and Judd Stables. In 19 classes together, they have 15 wins and three reserves to their credit, including the 13-and-Under World’s Champion of Champions title just last year. Their run this year also included tricolors at Asheville, Tampa Charity, Chattanooga/Cleveland Charity, Lexington, and ETSA Midsummer Classic. The big and bold CH Carameaprize was the Reserve World’s Champion for hard-riding Grace Cutting and the Equitate LLC banner of Sheri Brandl. They have been strong all season, with a good reserve championship at Midwest and a tricolor win at FASH Spring. Carameaprize has all kinds of flash and chrome about his look, drawing the eye as he marches down the rail. Stonehenge was up for third with Sausha Saunders riding for Jon Saunders, followed by Callaway’s Love Me Or Leave Me in fourth with Samantha White.

CH Irresistible Design continued a spectacular run, unbeaten since Asheville 2013, where she swept the division. The picturesque bay mare was once again teamed with Elizabeth James Lipscomb for the Hollow Haven team. While Andy Freseth had difficulty with the crew at McDonalds this morning getting the order right for his grooms, he could have had nothing but good to say to Elizabeth and Lynda Freseth on their way back to the barn. The reigning National Champion took on a tremendous group of horses, one replete with multiple World’s Champions, and came away victorious. She had to get around the reigning World’s Champion of Champions, as A Night In Vegas was battling hard for the top prize, settling for the Reserve World’s Championship for the second year in a row with Grace Arnold driving. Trainer Jim Cherry was aboard in 2012 for a Reserve World’s Championship in Junior Park Pleasure. He came back to take the tricolor that year. CH A Cinderella Story has made noise everywhere she has been in her return to the show ring in 2014. A champion at Midwest, she went on to win twice more at Lexington last month. She and Karrie Graham were third today in this loaded group. American Art and Eddie Norris were stylish in fourth, always in the upper half of the class here no matter the amount of competition the gods of the numerical split throw at them.

That Wil Rowland is one cool customer. He goes in against all those girls out to beat him and goes home with the blue. Every once in a while it will be a reserve win, but that is a rarity. He has now taken 37 prizes home with CH Callaway’s Winning Number. Of those, 33 have been blue and four have been red. Of those red prizes, not a single one of them has come in the 13-and-under age group. They have all been against 17-and-under competition. The reigning World’s Champion of Champions was on top of his game for another win today in Section One of 13-and-Under Country Pleasure. Payton Lynn Walker made one of her best rides yet aboard Caroline Brackenridge, taking a good Reserve World’s Championship back to DeVore Stables for Ronald and Virginia Stanley. This is the first year in this division for the daughter of Callaway’s Guy Park and Callaway’s Caroline Jackson. CH Hard Day’s Night TS continued his excellent career with a third-place prize for Alyssa Flory. Miss Viviana and Madison Hunt were fourth for Karen Lee.

Ava Stachowski had that look of pure joy that comes along with your first World’s Championship. She took the Section Two blue in 13-and-Under Country Pleasure with America’s National Treasure. This was another find by Jim and Shawn Stachowski, as the dark bay gelding had shown just once before Ava took over. He is by Playboy’s Romeo and out of Really Truly, by Periaptor. Dad Jim Stachowski headed up the round of honor today, as Ava cried tears of joy. Ella Stafford Van Diest made perhaps her best ride yet with Brianna Fox. The entry of Kokopelli Equine LLC is trained by Rob and Stephanie Kritzler. This is the second year for these two to be teamed up. They saved their best for the biggest stage to earn this Reserve World’s Championship. CH Imagine If and Chloe Hauville finished third from Cater Stables, with G.V. Silver Oak and Sommer Justice in fourth for Grand Vin Stables.

About as stamped by a parent as a pony can be, Handsome Harry could easily be mistaken for his sire Twin Willow’s Handsome Dan. That same curve and flair, complete with the shining black coats make it easy to recognize their familial relation. Then they start moving and the comparison is even better. Handsome Harry stepped to the blue again this year as the Four-Year-Old Harness Pony World’s Champion with Jeff McClean. The entry of Golden Creek Farms was also the Three-Year-Old World’s Champion last year. Crystal Creek’s Captain Mike is by CH Crystal Creek’s Commander and out of Hawkeye’s Dark Angel. He and Maureen Campbell were the Reserve World’s Champions today for Sandra Surber. They had previously won against aged competition at Midwest and Asheville Invitational.

One of the excellent riders from High Caliber Stables, Allie Poovey made the good catch ride today aboard CH Stonecroft I’m Radiant. The entry of Cindy Dunham earned the Section Two blue in the 13-and-Under Three-Gaited Show Pleasure division. This is just the second show for Allie and I’m Radiant. They came together rapidly indeed, as I’m Radiant earned his first World’s Championship title. The bright chestnut gelding is by I’m A New Yorker and out of Sultan’s Radiance, a grand member of the Broodmare Hall of Fame. Maisie Benfield will not soon forget today. She spent the morning as an equitation World’s Champion and the afternoon as a pleasure Reserve World’s Champion. She and Rapa Nui left with the red ribbon for Maple Hill Stables. This team also earned reserve prizes at Rock Creek and Shelby County Fair, staying within this 30-mile radius for their show circuit. Kalarama’s Witness and Havana Wester finished third for Havana Daydreamin’ Farm. Undulata’s Just Plain Nuts and Emma Wood were fourth for Three Sisters Stables LLC.

A Three-Year-Old Three-Gaited Reserve World’s Champion a year ago, Tefnut was up for the Junior Three-Gaited Park World’s Championship today in a high-octane affair. Neil Visser made the winning ride for Golden Lantern Farms, taking back over the riding duties after Midwest Charity with the son of Undulata’s Nutcracker and Beat The Odds, also the dam of World’s Champion His Supreme Reflection. The pretty bay was rocked way back as few horses can to strut down victory lane. The late, great CH The Attache Orchid once again put her mark on the Louisville record books. She is the dam of Attache’s American Patriot. Another by Nutcracker, this fine chestnut was shown by Tre Lee for Steven E. Chancellor. American Patriot had shown just twice before, winning both times out at the last two Indianapolis Charity Horse Shows. Crack A Smile and Bob Brison were up for third in this big class, followed by Heir To The Prince and Bret Day in fourth for Greg Crews.

While this was the split of 14-17 Five-Gaited that shows during the day, with the other showing at night, the top three prizes went to Moonlight Memories, Fight Night, and Kiss Goodnight. Apparently they were making their case for being in the evening split. It was a continuation of a storybook week for McGee Bosworth, as she has been untouchable winning all three of her classes so far, all three on gaited horses. Sweeping the gaited pleasure splits yesterday, she took Moonlight Memories to their first World’s Championship together for Pair of Jacks Stables. Now trained by High Caliber, Moonlight Memories was the Junior Five-Gaited Mare World’s Champion last year with Virgil Helm in their final show together. Morgan Billig had a big hug for CH Fight Night as the Reserve World’s Champion. Trained by Tammy DeVore, the veteran of many a 14-17 five-gaited class was on top of his game in this good split. This is their best prize yet at Louisville, moving up a spot from their qualifier finish last season. Kiss Goodnight and Juliette Dell rounded out the night-themed top three for 6D Ranch. Retribution and Alexandria Cedrone finished fourth for Dan and Laura Cedrone.

Charlie Jones and Mr. Bones reclaimed their throne atop the Amateur Roadster to Bike division, taking on a good crew to win the World’s Championship under the direction of Jan Lukens. Champions at Lexington Junior League, they won this class for the sixth time in their storied career together. Last year’s winner, Thunderbolt, was the Reserve World’s Champion today. William Shatner made another warp speed drive under the DeLovely banner. Roller Coaster and longtime roadster man Danny Bugg finished in third, followed by Street Legal GRS and Dr. Chip Pugh in fourth.

Showing for the first time since taking the 2012 Junior Exhibitor Hackney Pleasure Driving National Championship, Boxford Moment To Remember returned to the show ring and picked up in the exact same place, the winner’s circle. Cheyenne Mabey was at the lines this time for Clay Merryman and Majestic Oaks. Moment To Remember is by So Unforgettable and out of Boxford Timeless Fashion. The venerable Pacifico’s Standing Ovation was the Reserve World’s Champion with Zach Meyer making the good drive for Brown Anderson Farms. Andy Freseth trains this team for Hollow Haven, as he and Zach seem to be cut from the same cloth, never changing expression win or lose, all business. They were the National Champions at the Royal last year as well as the winners of the AHHS Hackney Pleasure Driving Medallion Finals. I’m In Heaven and Rose Marie Wheeler were third for Patricia Peters and Majestic Oaks, with Seamair Dear Sir and Dylan Kirk fourth for Gail Lane.

Three trips to the ring in Patrick Jane’s career have resulted in two World’s Championships and a Reserve World’s Championship. Taking his second trip down victory lane this week, the striking bay colt was led by Tre Lee to the Yearling Breeders Open top spot for Tim Cherry and Sandy Backer Cherry. Sired by the Pat Shriver son, PVF’s Shriver This, he is out of Gia, by CH Captive Spirit. Follow back along that dam line and you will come to second dam Charmaya, by Santana’s Charm and then to the grand walk-trot mare, CH Zoraya. This colt thinks extremely highly of himself, parking out and modelling for the crowd and judges. Tim and Sandy are the owners and breeders, having given much of their time and effort to the show horse world, constructing landscape designs for a good portion of the barns here this week. Many people will know Sandy as the smiling face of the horse show office. They are a wonderful couple, greatly deserving of a horse like this. Ramon Gomez led a flashy chestnut with a white blaze to reserve honors for Blythewood Farms. He Is Rare is by CF Rare Night Out and out of CF Chief’s Foolish Rumor, by Arrowhead Chief. That makes his dam a cross of Yorktown and Night Prowler blood. Night Prowler also inhabits the top side of this pedigree through grandsire CF First Night Out. Second dam on the top line is Ridgefield’s So Rare, a cross of Vanity’s Sensation Of Crebilly and Ridgefield’s Denmark lines. That is some old blood continuing to make its mark through the Blythewood program. Elegantly Beautiful showed to third with Brian Chappell and Marie Bouvet for Julie Behrend Jones. Sunset’s Flying Kiss had the Hufferd brothers John and Kurt in from the Morgan world to take fourth for Pamela Boyers.

Sallie Mason Wheeler followed buddy Alex Rudder’s lead and hit the ring first in her 13-and-Under Five-Gaited split, streaking like silver lightning into the ring aboard CH Callaway’s Born For This. It was this same take no prisoners approach yesterday for Alex and ended in the same way, with a unanimous World’s Championship win. Sallie Mason is about as matter of fact as you will find in a kid. She tells it like it is and nothing seems to knock her off her game. She was spot on today for Ceil and Kenny Wheeler and the Mercer Springs team, winning yet another blue prize for Box N-1, the Freedom Hall home of the Wheelers and their friends and family for the week of Louisville. Layton Sydenstricker just keeps getting better and better aboard He’s Here For The Party. Todd Graham directs this team in their second campaign together. They had a monster win early this year in the 17-and-Under Championship at Asheville, scoring the tricolor at Rock Creek as well. They were Reserve World’s Champions today with a great show. Callaway’s Gabriel helped Allie Poovey continue a stellar afternoon. They were third for Todd and Margaret Poovey and High Caliber Stables. Kalarama’s Lady Bancroft finished fourth with Payton Walker for Debra Phemester and trainer Tammy DeVore.

Gettin’ Fancy got the final push over the edge into eligibility for the Broodmare Hall of Fame in the Weanling Breeders Open. The dam of CH I’m McDreamy and Designed By Fancy SS now has that necessary third World’s Champion on her list of progeny in Fancy Cat SS. She has now produced three Kentucky State Fair winners by three different stallions. This one is by the South African celebrity stud, Tomcat. Antonio Hernandez and Todd Valentine were the winning combination with this chestnut colt for owner and breeder Toni Nastali. Jesse West showed the Alliance Stud entry, Got The Fever, to the Reserve World’s Championship. Got The Fever is by the Alliance stallion Delirium and out of The Rose Lady. This mare comes straight out of the Tabors’ bloodlines. She is by Roseridge Heir and out of a Worthy Son mare. Tre Lee had another top in hand baby, taking third here with Seraph’s Obsession for Scott Gonyaw. Carlsbad Cavern was fourth with Bryce Smithwick for Singing Hills Stable.
